TOWN OF SPRINGFIELD PUBLIC NOTICE TO OTSEGO LAKE USERS:

The summer season also brings with it some lake water issues, most serious is the Harmful Algae Bloom. It is very important to know what it looks like and stay away, especially children and animals. Please use the links below to educate yourself on this matter.

August 15, 2025

Otsego Lake algae (cyanobacteria) bloom and toxins update:

Greetings!
Please read this message in its entirety as it includes important information about ongoing conditions at Otsego Lake that you should bear in mind as you make decisions about using the lake.

This message addresses multiple topics:
-current conditions lake wide
-algal toxin concentration results from July 2 through Aug 12
-precautions and links to State HABs information and resources.
To begin, no blooms have been reported or confirmed this week, though cyanobacteria abundance is on the rise and mid-lake water clarity has decreased.

Toxin presence: Toxins were not detected in samples collected from July 2 through July 30. Beginning Aug 7, toxins have been detected at low but variable concentrations. In samples collected Monday and Tuesday of this week from shoreline sites and open water, concentrations ranged from <0.3 ppb (parts per billion) to 4.7 ppb Total Microcystins.

We have been made aware of two cases of reported symptoms after swimming in the lake, one in a pet (vomiting and diarrhea) and one in a human (skin rash on upper body and arms) on Wednesday and Thursday (Aug. 13 and 14) off Brookwood Point and in the vicinity of Lakeland Shores, respectively. We urge lake users to report any symptoms related to exposure to the Oneonta office of the NYS Dept. of Health (odo@health.ny.gov).

We urge lake users to stay informed of confirmed blooms on NYS DEC's New York Harmful Algal Bloom Reporting System (NYHABS) map

Know It. Avoid It. Report It.
Keep watch along the shoreline and at the water surface, especially in sheltered areas (boat slips, small coves, etc.). Avoid discolored or cloudy water, green streaks, foamy accumulations, etc., as these areas may contain cyanobacteria, associated toxins, and other irritants. If you see suspicious conditions, report it to the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation HABs Program via the online report tool.

Weather and lake conditions are prime for continued development of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), which may be intermittent and change quickly. Lake users should check the water conditions before entering the water or allowing pets or children to do so. You can make decisions about how you decide to interact with the lake. Remember HABs can be dangerous to Humans and Animals. If we learn of additional confirmed HABs, we will use this system to notify you of that information. For more information on HABS and related health concerns please go to the NYS DEC website.

We also note that the New York State Department of Health recommends against the use of untreated surface waters for domestic use; during blooms, surface waters treated with individual home treatment systems should not be used for domestic use (see the Dept. of Health page https://www.health.ny.gov/publications/2849/index.htm)

Note that this message is being sent from the SUNY Oneonta Biological Field Station in collaboration with the Otsego Watershed Supervisory Committee and the Otsego County Conservation Association.
